Marion, Ohio
I lived in Marion, Ohio for almost 38 years.
I know when you think of getting away for a vacation Marion is not even on your list unless you are a President Harding
buff. But Marion is a nice little city and it is centrally located. If you live in Marion, it is only 2-3 hours away from any other city in Ohio. Let me take you on a tour of this small but wonderful city.
Ohio has many
festivals. One of the most popular festivals is The Marion Popcorn Festival. The year it started there was not a piece of popcorn to be found. It has gotten better in later years. A huge parade kicks off
the festivities. The years I went there were big name entertainment, games
just for kids in the kiddy corner, carnival rides, plenty of booths selling carnival food, and the famous beer gardens. The whole downtown is shut down the first Thursday after Labor Day. It continues on into Friday, and Saturday. There are only
three days to enjoy the fest. It is fun walking in the middle of the street or
looking at all the decorated display windows. The atmosphere just says party,
party, party. For more information click on this link: http://www.popcornfestival.com/.
And of course
Marion has a county fair. It is usually held in June. The best part about the county fair is there is only a time admission price that includes all the rides.
The last time I went it cost only $5.00 per person and that included rides and
the grandstand. Since is has been some years since I went I tried to find
out what the prices were but I couldnt find them. I did came up with this great website: http://www.wmrn.com/jacor-common/globalphotos.html of pictures of past fairs. So if you are in Marion in June go, have fun. You will be glad you will be glad you did.
If you are in Marion and it is not fair time or popcorn festival time there is still much to do. Of course the first on your list should be to go out to the mall, Southland Mall, that is. They have all the usual shops: http://www.southland-mall.net/\. And the other most shopped stores are Ames and Meijers department stores. I am not even going to mention Wal-mart or Kmart.
That is a given.
If you are an outdoor person
there are the local parks each offering something a little bit different at each park: http://www.mariononline.com/saturday/

If you are a museum/history bluff of course Marion has
plenty of that also. If you like Present Harding than you are in luck. Marion has two sites: The Harding home, and the memorial. Click on these links to find out more information:

We have a popcorn museum. It
features old time popcorn wagons under a circus top. It is much fun. Kids would like this one. Visit it at http://www.wyandotpopcornmus.com/
Instead of naming each museum go to www.visitmarionohio.com
The Marion Train depot is
being restored and trains still pass by the depot every day. That is one of the
problems about living in Marion, you will have to stop for trains. So sit back
and count how many train cars there are without getting dizzy and click onto this website: http://www.qsl.net/wd8rif/marion.htm
Like music? We
have the Marion Drum and Bugle Corp and the Harding drumline. Just walk by when
they are practicing and you will hear such heavenly music. Do not forget to visit

How about mysteries, in the Marion cemetery we have a
big back ball on a pedestal. The granite ball revolves without any one touching
it. Why, no one has figured it out yet even though it has been studied. Click on this website to start the tour: http://www.ghosttoghost.com/cemetery.htm
We have other curiosities, a gypsy queen is buried in the graveyard too.

But not only do the people go there to visit the dead but to look at
the many beautiful statues and moments, and to exercise. When you are walking
among all that beauty no one seems to bother you.
By visiting the websites you will discover that Marion has so much than
you thought at first glance. Hope you have fun.
Dont forget our hometown newspaper

I know I am missing a place or a website someone may consider important. Please e-mail and if I like it I will include it in my page. I enjoyed living in Marion until United Facilities, a Quaker Oats warehouse, shut down. Marion used to be an industrial giant but no more. It is now
service oriented
Here is a list of favorite places you can go in Ohio. Most within a few minutes to less than 4 hours.
http://www.bbonline.com/oh/bucyrus.html
A bed and breakfast in the town Bucyrus, Ohio. Home of the bratwurst festival.
Just down the road is Waldo. Just
a small dot on the map but if you go to the G and R tavern you can get the best bologna sandwich. It is about an inch thick and fried. I had one once and it
was worth the short trip.
If you keep going down the road you will go past Delaware Dam. Please stop. It is neat fun to work across the dam over the
metal grid. You can also go fishing or play on the play equipment. And if you keep going you will get to Delaware State Park. Remember
we are talking about Delaware, Ohio and not the state. Fishing, swimming, camping,
boating and hiking is the order of the day for this picture perfect spot. Still
further down the road going towards Columbus you will see Allum Creek. Pretty
much like Delaware State Park, a place to swim and fish and play in the sun.
Now once get close to Columbus, Ohio there is so much to do and see because
it is Ohios capitol. I am just going to give you a very quick version. The rest you can find on the web. Visit Columbus Zoo, go next
door to the amusement park: Wydotte Lake, and make sure you visit Ohio natural history, COSI: Columbus science and industry,
Lazarus Dept store, City Civic Center, and in August, The Ohio State Fair. But
like I said this is just the short list.
Do not miss out on visiting Mohican State Park, Sea World, Mad River
Mountain or Old Mans Cave. What would a trip be if you didnt stop at Velvet Ice
Cream Millss. Mansfield, Ohio has Kingwood Center, a place where all types of
flowers and wild life resides. Lots of fun and it is free. Dont forget about Lake Erie and hop on of the ferries to take a tour of one of the many islands and to
taste some wine from the vineyards or visit Perrys Monument. And last but not
least is Cedar Point: a great amusement park with many old and new rides, including roller coasters, and shows. Fun, fun, fun. Do I need to mention the Cincinnati Reds or
the Cleveland Bengals?
Like I said this is only the short version. You can find many more neat and fun place in Ohio on the web.
