How to live cheaply
So now you got your apartment and your roommate, and a way to pay for everything, lets talk about how not
to go into debt over your eyeballs.
Never loan money unless you can afford never to see it back. I
dont care if it just $5.00 or $500.00. If you cant afford it dont loan it. Help in some other way. Remember if mom
and dad cant or wont loan him/her money, or the bank wont loan that person money, why should you?
If they are hungry feed them, cold, give them a blanket. An
emotional mess, refer to the nearest hotline or counseling. Do what you can but
remember you cant save everyone.
And as you will soon learn hardships builds character. Some
people learn from their mistakes or situations, others dont. Give your permission
to say no.

I was trying to find articles on how to buy used furniture from yard sales, thrift stores, outlet stores,
newspapers, etc. But I couldnt so here are some things I have learned.
Free is the cheapest when you are acquiring the things you need for the home. Tell everyone you know what
you need or want. Especially tell relatives.
Anolther way is to trade something you have for something some one else has.
Or consider going around to apartment complexes on weekends when people are moving in and out. You might find just the right piece and it is free. Or you
might consider working for it like cleaning out an attic or garage.
If you still need more stuff than try this route. Yard sales, garage sales, tag sales or what ever you call them are also a very cheap way to acquire furniture
and other goods. They are the goods before the leftovers are taken to a thrift
store.
Before you start out for yard sales read the newspaper ads carefully.
It tells you a little bit of what is being sold. This is good because
you dont want to waste time. Once you decide on the sales you want to go to you
can either go early to get the best selection; or go later and see if you can haggle over the price.
Inspect item(s) thoroughly. There are no returns. Make sure it will fit into the apartment or dorm. Comfort,
size, and quality should be your main concerns. You can always throw a blanket
or sheet over the piece. But do make sure that you can live with it, that it
is comfortable and that it wont fall apart until you can replace it.
If it is dirty can you clean it, if it is smelly can you destink it.
Next, have a truck to be able to haul it away. And last make
sure you have money on you. Most people will not take checks or credit cards.
The hardest part about yard sales is the time it takes to find that piece of furniture or item you need.
Second in price are thrift stores. The good news is thrift
stores have sales or days that things are ½ and so forth. So check them out. Most of them will take cash, credit cards, checks, or debit cards. Some have delivery service or know someone who is willing to deliver.
It will cost extra but could be worth it if all you have is a small car and no friends with trucks.
Again check everything out because there are no returns.
A more expensive way is to buy from stores. Some stores specialize
in cheap or throw- a- way furniture. You can buy plastic or foam furniture
cheaply if you plan to stay for a short while. Moving can be costly if you have
to rent a truck each time you move. Than there is the matter of paying a deposit
on each apartment you rent.
Another way is to go to a furniture store. If you can afford
it do get really good, quality furniture but if you cant dont be a shame to have second hand furniture. Second-hand is better than sitting or sleeping on the floor if the repo man comes.
The most expensive way is to rent furniture. It all depends
on your need. If you are just living in one place but know you wont be there
except for a short length of time that could be the route to go. It would be
cheaper than a moving truck but you are going to be paying for convenience.
Some apartments come furnish but than you have to take what is there but you wont have to worry about it
when you move. Just some food for thought.
